SAN DIEGO -- SAN DIEGO (AP) — Comic-Con International, the comic book and pop culture extravaganza, is kicking off in San Diego. The convention, which draws over 130,000 fans annually, opens for a preview night Wednesday and runs through Sunday.

A long-standing San Diego institution, Comic-Con began in 1970 when a small group of comics, movie, and science fiction fans from San Diego put on an event attended by just 300 people. Since then, Comic-Con has grown into a global phenomenon and is widely recognized as the premier popular arts convention in the world.

Beyond the convention hall, San Diego will be buzzing with activities, brand activations, parties and events celebrating all things pop culture. Pop and R&B artist Jason Derulo, Japanese singer LiSA and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra are each expected to perform at parties during the weekend.

Please do not give your badge to a friend or to people outside the Convention Center when you leave Comic-Con. Security will perform random ID checks throughout the convention, so make sure the name on your badge matches your photo ID!

The term comes from the shortening of “comic book convention.” Today, “comic-con” gets shortened even more to just “con.” Although, “con” can also refer to a shortened version of “science fiction convention,” also known as a “sci-fi con.” Generally, “comic-con” refers to a pop culture convention.

Over 550 exhibitors (or over 900 if you include all areas) are listed for this year's Comic-Con, covering comics, merchandise, video games, television and film.

The convention's contract with the city extends to 2026, but Glanzer says organizers are open to considering other cities beyond that year. “We want to stay in San Diego,” he says. “But if the rank-and-file attendees can't afford to stay in San Diego, we have to take a serious look at what we're going to do.”
